Student In Frame - STISD's first-ever Coca Cola Scholar: Alfia Bilal

There's often a silent exchange from STISD's first-ever Coca-Cola scholar and soon-to-be grad walking the halls, a student that just keeps going and going and going. Behind that silence, there's a whole lot of sleepless nights, sweat, and tears that others don't see, shaping quite the esteemed and accomplished individual, leading to the beauty behind it all.

Alfia is one of 150 high school seniors from an initial pool of 103,800+ applications from across the country to be named a 2024 Coca-Cola Scholar. That's less than 1/6th of 1% of applicants. šŸ˜® Pretty impressive, don't you think?

South Texas ISD Science Academy engineering teacher receives 'Outstanding Teacher' award from the UTRGV College of Engineering and Computer Science

Late last month, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) honored its inaugural Outstanding Secondary Education Teacher of the Year during its E-Week & Broadening Participation in Engineering Summit. This year’s award recipient is Nelly Houston, engineering teacher and Career and Technical Education (CTE) department team leader at STISD Science Academy in Mercedes.

You're invited: District Title I Family Literacy Meeting on March 21 - Saving for College

STISD is hosting a District Title I Family Literacy Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, at the STISD Central Administration Teaching & Learning Center, located at 7001 E. Expressway 83 in Mercedes. Leticia Romero, President of the Curiman Brokers of the Rio Grande Valley, will present on the topic “Saving for College.”

All STISD parents are invited to attend.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez recognizes Science Academy students as top 10 winners of annual Congressional App Challenge for District 34

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) visited South Texas Independent School District’s (STISD) Mercedes complex last week to present awards to the top 10 winners of the annual Congressional App Challenge (CAC) competition for the 34th Congressional District of Texas. This year, all top 10 winners are students at STISD Science Academy in Mercedes.

RSA's Lindsey Clayborn named Region 1 Assistant Principal of the Year

Lindsey Clayborn, Assistant Principal of Rising Scholars Academy in South Texas ISD, has been named the 2024 Region 1 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA). The peer-based award recognizes assistant principals from the 20 TEPSA Regions across the state for their commitment to student learning as evidenced by exceptional school leadership.

On Monday, Feb. 5, the STISD Special Programs department will host a virtual session for STISD parents and families focused on “Understanding Dyslexia: How Does It Work in School?”
 
Dr. Brenda De La Garza, STISD Special Programs Director, will present on STISD’s Dyslexia Program, evaluations, and support services available for students with Dyslexia. Spanish translation will be available.

Rising Scholars earns national distinction through designation as a School to Watch

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as part of a national recognition program have designated STISD Rising Scholars Academy as a Texas School to Watch. Rising Scholars joins approximately 60 other campuses across the state with this distinction and honor.
